Easter Friendly Mocktails Everyone Can Enjoy This Holiday

Easter is a very special holiday for millions of people all around the world. Celebrated among loved ones and entire communities, Easter is the day of respect and appreciation, which is why most people reserve any spirituous imbibement for another time. In place of your usual celebratory or special occasion cocktails, wines, and beers, consider incorporating some delicious mocktail options into your Easter spread. Not only are virgin cocktails Easter-friendly, but they can be enjoyed by both children and adults!

Continue below for some Easter friendly mocktail recipes, plus a secret tip on where to go this Easter in Downtown Indianapolis. If you don’t have any dinner plans just yet!

Virgin Cocktail Recipes for Easter Dinner

Shirley Temple

You should have known that we were going to start with the famous Shirley Temple virgin cocktail. Made with carbonated lemon lime soda (or ginger ale) and a splash of grenadine, garnished with a maraschino cherry, and served over ice, this delicious Easter-friendly mocktail is always a hit among both kids and adults. Pregnant women especially appreciate the sweetness of this delightful drink!

Fun fact, the drink itself was named after the famous actress, Shirley Temple, but its creator is debated. Typically credited to a 1930’s bartender at Hollywood’s Chasen’s Restaurant, there is a hotel in Hawaii that also claims rights to the drink’s origin.

Roy Rogers

If a Shirley Temple mocktail is a little too childish for your taste, upgrade to a Roy Rogers. All you have to do is swap out the carbonated lemon lime soda for regular carbonated cola. Keep the grenadine and maraschino cherry garnish and serve it over ice. Now you have yourself a nonalcoholic classic mocktail known as a Roy Rogers. It tastes like cherry cola!

Virgin Bloody Mary

Upgrade that boring and bland tomato juice with Bloody Mary mix and some essential garnishes! Serving virgin Bloody Mary’s on Easter is a fantastic alternative to the traditional, vodka-based drink. Bloody Mary mix is a fantastic option, but you can season it classically with the proper Bloody Mary seasonings.

As for garnishes, details are important when it comes to mocktails, so be sure to dress up your virgin Bloody Mary’s with lemon wedges/wheels, celery stalks, queen olives, cornichons, gherkins, pickled radish, garlic cloves, banana peppers, jalapeños, red chili peppers, grilled shrimp skewers, candied bacon strips, celery salt, salt-and-pepper, dill, salted or seasoned rims, and any other fun garnishes you can think of.

Virgin Mimosa

Everybody loves orange juice, and even grapefruit juice and pineapple juice! These are all delicious juice bases for mimosas. But for Easter, consider making virgin mimosas by swapping out the champagne for nonalcoholic sparkling apple cider or nonalcoholic sparkling white grape juice! Dress up your mimosas with the selection of garnishes like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, frozen grapes, rosemary sprigs, basil sprigs, and even grenadine! Everybody will appreciate this delicious brunch and lunch staple on your special holiday.

Do you want to know where to go in Indy for the most delicious Easter dinner offering this Sunday? Visit English Ivy’s in Downtown Indianapolis for our famous Easter Ham Dinner! Be sure to check out our other weekly specials, too!

National Cocktail Day is Today!

We can all thank holidaymaker Jace Shoemaker-Galloway for creating National Cocktail Day. It is basically a day to appreciate and enjoy your favorite cocktails and alcoholic drinks! So go on, enjoy them! Fun Fact, the most popular cocktail drink in the United States is the Margarita!

Origin of Cocktails in the United States

Before prohibition, the term cocktail wasn’t used a lot. There was mention of it in an 1803 edition magazine called The Famer’s Cabinet, and then again in a New York magazine in 1806. In 1917, a Missourian by the name of Clara Bell Walsh coined the phrase, cocktail party, after inviting over a large crowd of guests for drinks at noon and calling it so.

But once alcohol became illegal, cocktail concoctions were popping up all over the place. Back then, cocktails were traditionally made with a combination of spirits, sugar, bitters, and water. Today, the Manhattan, Sazerac, and Old Fashioned still carry on this traditional recipe base.

Delicious Drink Pairings For Thanksgiving Dinner

The Thanksgiving Day meal is one of the central pleasures of the holiday occasion. Every element is perfectly orchestrated to complement and incorporate the entire seasonal theme. But many people tend to overlook the importance of a Thanksgiving dinner beverage. A variety of liquors, beers, and wines improve the flavor profiles of roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and more.

Whether you are hosting, attending, or going out to a restaurant for Thanksgiving this year, be sure to enhance the holiday pleasure with these deliciously-fitting Thanksgiving dinner drink pairings!

How to Pair a Perfect Drink With Thanksgiving Dinner

Wine

It doesn’t matter if you prefer red or white, you have many options for a perfect Thanksgiving dinner pairing. If you are a red wine drinker, opt for a Pinot Noir, Syrah, or even a Zinfandel. The low tannin, impugning the war is a delicate palate-pleaser that won’t overshadow the rest of your meal. Syrah and Zinfandel offer deep, complex flavors that are cozy for the fall season and complement the richness of a Thanksgiving dinner.

White wines recommended for Thanksgiving menus include Sauvignon Blancs, Rieslings, and Gewürztraminer. These whites perfectly complement the traditional herbs and seasonings used in a Thanksgiving dinner spread. They also pair well with potatoes. If you prefer sparkling wine, pour yourself a glass of anything labeled Brut; a sparkling rosé is a great pairing for smoked turkey.

Beer

If you are someone that loves a frosty cold beer to wash down your Thanksgiving dinner, direct your selection towards a Belgian style brew, preferably a Saison, which also happens to be an excellent palate cleanser. This rich and complex spiced ale pairs well with the seasonal flavors of Thanksgiving entrées and side dishes. If a yeasty Saison is not your first choice, any dark beer pairs well with a Thanksgiving dinner spread. If you are smoking your turkey, pour yourself a Scotch-style ale for an enhanced flavor profile.

Cocktails and Liquor

If wine and beer won’t cut it, you must be a cocktail drinker. Or perhaps you just like your whiskey neat. Either way, you have a load of options in store for you this holiday season. Gin and whiskey are two of the top-recommended liquors, either alone or in cocktails, for Thanksgiving dinner. The botanicals and herb base in gin brings out the flavor profiles in turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes.

Both bourbon and scotch are rich and slightly sweet, which are attributes complementary to many traditional Thanksgiving menu options like stuffing and candied yams. Opt for a Glenlivet of any kind, or a Tennessee whiskey that offers notes of dried fruit and caramel, like Gentleman Jack. You can never go wrong with a traditional Old Fashioned! Just avoid whiskeys that are overly smoky.

Not hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year? You are so lucky! Looking for a place that will serve you a memorable and traditional holiday meal you will absolutely love? Visit English Ivy’s Pub and Eatery in Downtown Indianapolis for Thanksgiving dinner this year! We are open this Thanksgiving from 5PM to 12AM, kitchen closing at 10PM. No reservations required!

Try These Classic Mardi Gras Cocktails to Celebrate Fat Tuesday 2021

It is Mardi Gras once again, folks! Sure, you might not be live at the show in New Orleans, but here in Indiana, you can still celebrate Fat Tuesday like a Bourbon Street regular. Just try these classic, made-for-celebrating Mardi Gras cocktails for some Southern Louisiana Cajun ambience!

Mardi Gras Specials Downtown Indianapolis 317-822-5070
Mardi Gras Specials Downtown Indianapolis 317-822-5070

The Number 1 Mardi Gras Cocktail is…

The Hurricane of Course!

Hurricanes have that alluring, tropical, orangey pink hues that call to you. Made from a combination of light rum, dark rum, passion fruit juice, OJ, and grenadine, you can always count on this cocktail to get the party started, and give you all the tropical vibes! And since they are garnished with an orange slice and maraschino cherries, you can enjoy a light snack and a fun drink, all in one! Traditionally, they are served over ice, but you can also order them frozen!

The Timeless Sazerac

The Sazerac is another Mardi Gras staple, but also popular in New Orleans all other seasons of the year. Formally made with Absinthe, bartenders now construct this popular drink with the safer version, Herbsaint liqueur. Along with Herbsaint liqueur, the Sazerac is made with rye whiskey, bitters, and simple syrup, and sleekly garnished with a lemon peel. The Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans has been serving this classic cocktail since 1949.

Grasshopper

If you like creamy minty drinks, a Grasshopper is never a bad choice on Fat Tuesday, Grasshoppers have been a New Orleans Mardi Gras classic for generations, and they are easy to make. A no-fuss combination of crème de menthe, white creme de cacao, and heavy cream creates a creamy, dreamy, minty cocktail that goes down so smooth, you’ll order another before you even finish your first! Plus, the green color is perfectly festive and honorary of Mardi Gras!

The Historic Facts Behind the Beloved Beef Manhattan

You might know it as a Beef Manhattan, but for millions of Americans, particular hailing from the East Coast, New York regions, the rightful moniker is open-faced hot roast beef sandwich. Either way, this delicious dish has been enjoyed for many generations all over the country, and continues to please even the pickiest of palates. As for us Hoosiers, we certainly love our Beef Manhattans, and appreciate their name and history! But why exactly do we call this beloved dish a Beef Manhattan in Indiana?

Scroll down to learn some noteworthy facts about the history and mystery behind America’s favorite hot sandwich, including where to get one on the fly in Downtown Indy after reading this blog!

Indianapolis Beef Manhattan Special
Indianapolis Beef Manhattan Special 317-822-5070

The Beef Manhattan Sandwich

The Beef Manhattan is a roast beef and gravy dish served with white bread and mashed potatoes. In fact, it is not even necessarily a sandwich, as it is traditionally served open-faced, atop a bed of mashed potatoes, and with bread slices on the side. However, today, modern chefs and at-home cooking enthusiasts continually add their own innovative twists and renditions of this classic roast beef and gravy meal, so you can find it served all sorts of ways. Here in Indiana, you often see Beef Manhattan dishes served as sandwiches, with a side of mashed potatoes, and everything topped with brown gravy.

What’s With the Name?

Ironically, the name Beef Manhattan is considered an inaccurate one since the rest of the nation, outside of New York, call these dishes open-faced roast beef sandwiches. Even more ironic is the fact that the name, Beef Manhattan, is rumored to have originated right here in Indianapolis! That’s right; in the late 1940’s, a deli, now out of business, dubbed this hot roast beef and gravy sandwich dish a Beef Manhattan on their menu.

In fact, Naval Ordnance Plant Indianapolis (NOPI) workers are to thank for naming this deli’s hot roast beef sandwich menu item. You see, during World War II, these NOPI workers were trained on a replicated set of the Norden Bombsight in Manhattan, New York. They loved the meal so much, they brought the idea back to their favorite deli in Indianapolis, and gave it the name, Beef Manhattan! From that point on, the Beef Manhattan became a Hoosier staple.
